Why 'Hot' Yoga and What Are The Benefits?
Practicing yoga in a heated room helps loosen the joints and improve the elasticity of the muscles, which allows for safer and deeper stretching. The heat will warm up your body which will increase your flexibility, this will allow you to practise with less risk to injury as you approach each posture.
You'll get your pulse rate up and increase your metabolism whilst practising in a hot studio. You'll sweat - a lot! This is an amazing detoxification for the entire body. By improving your lymphatic system, you'll find you are releasing a build up of toxins, which even if you live a healthy lifestyle are still present. It works by the 'tourniquet effect': stretching, balancing (using gravity), and creating pressure all at the same time. The blood supply in arteries and veins is being suppressed, creating pressure. When released, a lock gate effect is created, causing blood to rush through veins and arteries, flushing them out rejuvenating and reviving the tissue, whilst flushing out toxins and waste products.
The cardiovascular aspect of hot yoga will help you burn calories, so if you're looking to drop some weight, this is the practise for you!
There are other benefits, one of which is you'll be able to chart your progress. In the standard 'Hot' classes at HHY you'll practise the same sequence of postures in every class, so you'll be able to see where you are and how you're progressing from one week to the next next.
In hot yoga, we focus a great deal on the breath. We use it to move consciously from one posture to the next, and more, we use it to help us relax. The breath is a good indicator for telling us how we feel, if you're experiencing shallow breathing, then you back off and find your 'center' again. Hopefully you'll be able to take these techniques off the mat and find relaxation in your every day life.
